CRESCENT People: John Boyanoski — New Books, Statues of SC Mayors, and a Bigger State Football Rivalry than Carolina / Clemson?

Are you going to do a follow-up to Palmetto Pigskin History to kind of catch up to where we are now? I would love to do maybe five years from now and adding five years, the last five years. I went all the way to 2010 for the book. There are a lot of great stories, maybe more like the color of it. Some of the things that are just fascinating, there are so many stories I had to skip over. So many stories, great players that highlights the kind of love affair that South Carolina has with the sport. So, yeah, I would love to do a follow-up at some point. Maybe transitioning to college ball? No,... [Read the full story]

It never fails that when you try to do something new, you step out, you want to do something different, you’ve always somebody, more than one somebody who says “Don’t do that, you shouldn’t do that, you can’t do that.” How many people told you that and how did you handle it? ZAC: We didn’t have many. I think there were some who really didn’t understand it. It was like, “OK, that’ll be interesting to see,” but I also think that people that knew us probably knew that we wouldn’t listen. And we had done some research and we had done some surveys and things like that... [Read the full story]

Tom Sponseller, president and chief lobbyist for the S.C. YOUR TURN: “Why is SC So Stupid About Education and Technology?” By Phil Noble
February 21, 2012 · Leave a Comment
Some issues are a close call – it is hard to know what is the right thing to do. Technology in education is not one of these issues. It’s obvious that technology and education are the keys to success in the global economy of the 21st century, both for us as individuals and as a state. The only question is: Why is SC so stupid about figuring this out and doing the right things? While our experience in South Carolina is discouraging, we only have to look across the border 20 miles north of Charlotte to see an excellent example of what we are missing. First, the bad news: the foundation has been... [Read the full story]

CRESCENT Places: Dark Corner Distillery — Bringing Moonshine to the Sunshine (Part 4)

HOW YOUR WIFE DEALS WITH THE IDEA OF YOU MOVING FROM ELECTRICAL ENGINEER TO MOONSHINER When I went home to tell her, she knows my passion, my drive. She’s seen it her whole life because everything I do I try to be the best at, like all of us. Student body president, captain of the baseball, basketball team. Started an engineering company 4 years out of college and then I had this idea of this distillery. So she’s definitely on board with it, loves it, and what made it even sweeter deal was I told her that if we got our ducks in a row, I’d like for her to be at the distillery while... FROM THE DESK OF: The Happiest Guy in Florida
January 23, 2012 · Leave a Comment
BY: Taft Matney As the sun rose over Florida this morning, just a day removed from the South Carolina primary, there’s no doubt that the happiest guy in the state is Newt Gingrich. Forget about the piles of direct mail and robocalls in South Carolina. Think about how crazy last week was. It started on Monday morning with voters and candidates alike believing that Mitt Romney had won both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, making him 2-0 coming in to South Carolina. Let’s be honest. At that point the race was Governor Romney’s to lose. He was poised to win South Carolina... [Read the full story]
