DESCRIPTION:Charleston’s Premier Endurance Competition: The 23rd Annual Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series Kicks Off May 19 \n \n \nDo you have what it takes to compete in one of the Lowcountry’s toughest and longest-running endurance competitions? The Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series (CSTS) is kicking off its 23rd year of challenging athletes to the area’s premier swim\, bike and run event at James Island County Park. Registration is open now and the first race starts May 19. \nAthletes are encouraged to sign up for one race\, or compete in multiple or all of the five-race series. Winners will be awarded from each individual race as well as the entire series. The 2013 series will be held on May 19\, June 16\, July 7\, and July 28\, with the Championship Race set for Aug. 11. \nNearly 25\,000 athletes have raced in this swim-bike-run series since it began in 1991. It has been honored as one of the Top Ten Charleston Signature Sport Events by the Charleston Metro Sports Council\, placing it in good company with other Charleston favorites like the Family Circle Tennis Cup and the Cooper River Bridge Run. \nEach race begins at 7:15 a.m. with a 600-yard freshwater swim in the lake at James Island County Park\, continues with a 12-mile bike ride through the park and out and back on Riverland Drive\, and finishes with a flat 5K run. \nA discounted registration fee is offered for registration for 3\, 4 or 5 races; series registration must be made by May 19. Each race is limited to 400 participants\, and fees start at $55 per race. \nCSTS offers participation and awards throughout a variety of divisions. Awards will be presented to the top five men and the top three women finishers in the Open/Elite division. Awards will also be presented to the top three age group winners in five-year increments\, as well as to the top male and female finishers over the age of 40 (Masters division).  Participants may choose to compete in the Clydesdale (men over 200 pounds)\, Athena (women over 150 pounds) or Masters Clydesdales (men over age 40 and over 200 pounds) divisions. DESCRIPTION:With needs ranging from new laundry facilities to a welding room\, next month’s AMIkids Beaufort croquet tournament fundraiser brings great need – but also great fun. \n“This event offers a perfect day for croquet and picnic lunches\, and we raise money for a great cause – helping young men earn a second chance\,” said John Huntley\, chairman of AMIkids Beaufort. “This is our 22nd Annual Croquet Tournament and each year it seems to get better. \n“We have wonderful hosts at Brays Island and it’s a beautiful setting\,” Huntley said. “We appreciate the croquet teams that sign up to play\, we appreciate the people who donate to AMIkids Beaufort\, and we appreciate everyone who contributes to make this annual event a success.” \nThe residential facility in Dale provides not only education but numerous hands-on educational opportunities\, treatment and behavior modification. AMIkids also partners with eight community service projects throughout Beaufort County.  Only male teens convicted of non-violent offenses can participate. Students work toward their high school equivalency diplomas. \nThe May 11 golf croquet tournament will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brays Island off US 17 in Sheldon\, about 15 miles west of Beaufort. A “Captain’s Party” for all participants will be held May 10 at the historic Marshlands home of Brantley Harvey Jr. in Beaufort’s National Historic Landmark District. \nTeams of four to eight people are encouraged to enter\, and period costumes are one of the hallmarks of the annual tournament.  The teams bring a picnic lunch to enjoy\, and there is lots of space to set up a team tent with a prize being offered for the best looking tent/picnic display. \n“We have a lot of fun with the croquet and it ranges from serious players to people just out for a fun day for a good cause\,” said Dr. Mike Harris\, co-organizer with Mike Ingram of the AMIkids Beaufort croquet tournament. “This event is more of a picnic than a tournament.  A proficiency at croquet is definitely not a requirement for an enjoyable afternoon.” \nDuring the croquet day\, a silent auction helps raise money for the program\, formerly known as Beaufort Marine Institute. SUMMARY:Where the Wild Things Run 5K in Ravenel
DESCRIPTION:The serene nature and cultural preserve Caw Caw Interpretive Center is opening its doors to trail runners for a 5K race! Dubbed Where the Wild Things Run\, the event will take place on Saturday\, April 27. \nThis spring\, nature lovers get a little slice of heaven as they make their way through the trails of the beloved park during a 5K off-road run. Runners will be rewarded with beautiful vistas and hopefully a wildlife sighting or two! Caw Caw Interpretive Center is a 654-acre site in Ravenel that is rich in natural\, cultural and historical resources. The beautiful site features over seven miles of trails with trailside exhibits\, elevated boardwalks through wetlands\, historic rice fields\, a former tea farm\, wildlife habitats\, and more. \nThe race will begin at Caw Caw Interpretive Center at 8:30 a.m. on April 27. An award ceremony with light food and beverages will be held following the race. T-shirts are guaranteed for participants who register prior to April 20. This race is for ages 10 and up. Ages 10-15 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone; however\, chaperones do not require registration or participation in the race. Dogs are not allowed at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. \nOnline registration for Where the Wild Things Run is open now through April 26.  Late registration and packet pickup will be available on race day from 6-8 a.m. Registration fees are $34. Residents of Charleston County receive a discounted fee of $28 when registering in advance. \nThis 5K is another in a series of runs offered this year by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC).  CCPRC recently hosted the Mullet Haul 5 and 10-mile trail run at the Mullet Hall Equestrian Center in March. The 22nd Annual Lowcountry Cajun Festival heats up James Island County Park on Sunday\, April 7\, 2013 from 12 – 6 p.m. Bringing Louisiana living to the Lowcountry\, Cajun Fest is a full-day of Zydeco music\, Cajun and Creole foods\, children’s activities and lots of entertainment straight from the bayou! \nFull-bellied fun is what this festival is all about as local and regional chefs cook up a variety of mouth-watering foods.  Savor the tastes of a variety of Cajun and Creole dishes like jambalaya\, alligator\, etouffe\, andouille sausage and of course\, crawfish\, crawfish\, and more crawfish!  Also enjoy Lowcountry favorites like seafood and Southern barbecue. Those who prefer a tamer menu will find up ample portions of festival foods like hot dogs\, snow cones\, funnel cakes and more. \nPeople who love crawfish will discover paradise at the Lowcountry Cajun Festival! Visitors travel from near and far for huge servings of fresh\, steaming crawfish\, undoubtedly the festival’s most popular food item. And crawfish-eating connoisseurs will have the chance to show off their talent at the popular annual crawfish eating contest\, which begins at 2:30 p.m.  Visitors are encouraged to sign up for the contest when they arrive at the festival. \nNon-stop Zydeco music performed live throughout the day will keep your toes tappin’. SUMMARY:Installation of Larry Doby and Bernard Baruch Statues in Camden
DESCRIPTION:  \nA unique act of racial and religious reconciliation will occur in Camden\, South Carolina on March 29th as statues of Camden native sons Larry Doby\, the first African American to integrate the American Baseball League in 1947\, and financier Bernard Baruch\, of Jewish ancestry and an adviser to US Presidents Wilson through Kennedy\, will be unveiled. \nThe dedication will take place at 2:30pm on a main square provided by the City of Camden at Broad and Dekalb Streets on the front lawn of the Camden Archives and Museum. \nParticipants in the unveiling ceremony will include U. S. Senator Tim Scott\, Baseball Hall of Famer Jim Rice – a native of Anderson\, SC – who will pay tribute to Larry Doby\, philanthropist Darla Moore – a native of Lake City\, SC – who will pay tribute to Bernard Baruch\, Camden Mayor Tony Scully\, and attorney John S. Rainey\, originator of the project \, who will speak on the theme of reconciliation. \nRainey is the descendent of two Confederate soldiers and a signer of the Ordinance of Secession. Mrs. Anne Edens Rainey is the descendent of Lt. Wade Hampton Gibbes\, CSA\, who fired the first shot at Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor to begin the American Civil War. The sculptures were created by Maria Kirby-Smith of Camden\, a descendent of Lieutenant General Edmund Kirby-Smith\, CSA\, who was the last Confederate officer to surrender to Union forces in Texas in June\,1865. \nA string and brass ensemble will perform a medley of the Battle Hymn of the Republic\, Dixie and We Shall Overcome to conclude the ceremony. \nBaruch’s statue will be featured sitting on a park bench at the edge of a baseball diamond with his autobiography in hand\,”My Own Story”.  Doby’s statue will stand just behind home plate\, autographing a baseball to Baruch. Each is extending to the other his life’s story across the expanse of time\, race\, and religion. They appear to be in conversation. \nThe overarching theme of the installation is Reconciliation. \n“I wanted to do this project to express our heart- felt gratitude for how far we have come as a state and nation\, but with concern for how far we still have to go. By creating this special place to honor two lives that contributed greatly to our nation\, we will recognize that we are one people inextricably bound together by our shared history and common destiny. We know we have not come as far as we should or as far as we can or as far as we must to achieve reconciliation. But why not now in this place–South Carolina’s oldest inland city– and at this time? DESCRIPTION:It’s business in the front\, party in the back. It’s the mullet\, and it’s being celebrated in Charleston — not exactly a place known for mullet culture. \nIf you are a fan of the “mullet” hairstyle\, or proudly sport one of your own\, mark your calendar for Saturday\, March 2!  Dubbed the Mullet Haul\, this third annual trail run encourages runners to wear either real or imitation mullets during their participation in the race\, held at the Mullet Hall Equestrian Center on Johns Island. \nThe Mullet Haul Trail Run features both a 5- and 10-mile off-road run on the equestrian trails of the park on Johns Island March 2.  Both races begin at 10 a.m. Runners are welcomed to\, but not required to sport a mullet hairstyle as part of this themed event. The best mullet and themed costume will be awarded a prize. Following the races\, awards will be presented for the top runners\, and all participants will be invited to take part in a post-race party featuring live music and complimentary food and beverages. \nOnline registration for the Mullet Haul Trail Run is open now through March 1 at www.ccprc.com/mullethaul.
